1974 | The Radio 1 audience was lowered in areas covered by Commercial Radio, however the station largely retained it's position. |
Saturdays | Eric Idle was heard in April and May with his 'Radio 5' show The show was replaced with the 'Beach Boys Story' narrated by Bob Harris and after that series, Tony Blackburn began a new Top 100 series. 2-3Pm saw a succession of interesting programmes culminating in a new series 'All American Heroes' which introduced Paul Gambaccini to the station. Saturdays also lost the regular slot edition of 'Sounds of the Seventies' |
24.03.74 SUNDAY | Paul Burnett started with Radio 1 with a 3 hour 10am show. DLT moved to 3Pm with 2 hours of requests. 'my Top 12' started again, reducing Tom Browne's slot to the Top 20 6Pm -7Pm. |
April | Tony Blackburn broadcast his show live from the home of the Womble family in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. The DJ hoped it would Make up for the public pestering they suffer at school and on the telephone coupling them with the famous furry puppets. |

1974 | 'The Story of Pop' was broadcast - a Major series summarising the previous 25 years of popular music, year by year. Many Radio 1 staff contributed, along with interviews with dozens of musicians. The series included an interview between Radio 1's John Pidgeon and Marc Bolan. |
