STAR INTERVIEWS

Never shying away from asking those probing questions to rock and pop giants, this list illustrates the many Radio 1 interviews conducted over the years and heard on programmes such as 'Scene and Heard' and 'Rock On'.

The interviews resulted in a frank and often revealing insight into the life, influences, talent and thinking behind the voices we hear on disc.

CELEBRITY DJ's

Many celebrities have been invited to broadcast their own shows from the Radio 1 studios.

A memorable such person was Elton John, who spun the platters that mattered at Egton House in both March 1975 and December 1976 with his shows 'EJ the DJ'.

Other special shows have included Boy George sitting in for David Jensen in 1983, Eastenders duo Tom 'Lofty' Watts and Leslie 'Dirty Den' Grantham presenting their own tribute to Motown in 1987 with a show called 'Hitsville E20'.

1991 found  Jason Donovan sitting in Simon Bates' chair and in 1992 Radio 1 invited ex-Supremes lead singer and successful soloist Diana Ross to present The Golden Hour. In 1994 stand-up comedian Jack Dee was heard on a Sunday on 1FM.

STAR SPECIAL

During the late 1970's and early 1980's a series showcased a different music artiste  introducing their favourite records on their own two hour show. Broadcast on Sunday afternoons and titled Star Special, over the years listeners heard the voices and choices of such diverse celebs as;

1979; David Bowie, Lene Lovitch, Harry Chapin, Justin Hayward, John Miles and Abba. 1980; Joe Jackson, Ian Hunter, Frank Zappa, Richard Thompson and Dennis Waterman. 1981; Brian Ferry and Dean Freidman.

MY TOP 12/ MY TOP 10

This long-running series used a simple but effective format; request a well known personality to list their favourite records of all time and invite them into the studio to record their comments, their life and loves.

Perhaps the Radio 1 equivalent of Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, this popular show was aired on weekend afternoons. Originally titled 'My Top 12' and presented by Brian Matthew, it was launched in 1973. Later fronted by Bob Harris and Noel Edmonds, guests in 1974 included  Rod Stewart, Joni Mitchell and Neil Diamond.

Andy Peebles became the regular presenter from 1983 to 1989, and in 1984 it was renamed 'My Top 10' to allow more star chat in the programme. Amongst the hundreds of guests on his shows were Huey Lewis, Roger Taylor, Paul Simon, Bros, Debbie Harry, Lisa Stansfield, Cliff Richard,  George Best, Janet Jackson, Phil Collins,  Francis Rossi, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Samantha Fox and Bryan Adams

For his Friday evening show, Andy called upon sporting heroes such as Ian Botham, batsman Sir Leonard Hutton as well as wicketkeepers Bob Taylor and Godfrey Evans,
