Nicky was Born in Edinburgh in 1961. He attained a Degree in History at Aberdeen University. As a youngster, Campbell used to phone up his local IRN station Radio Forth and send up presenter Steve Hamilton during phone-ins. Ironically, Steve Hamilton became the voiceover man for Wheel of Fortune when Campbell took over the game show in the early 1990's! His first radio experience was on ILR station Northsound Radio in Aberdeen as a jingle writer, commercial producer, classical music presenter and D.J. Nicky Campbell joined Radio 1 in October 1987 on the recommendation of Jimmy Savile after a successful stint at Capital Radio in London. Only Stuart Henry, Mark Goodier and Campbell have held down daily shows as Scots. Campbell presented a host of shows on Radio 1 introducing himself by his full title ''Nicholas Andrew Argyle Campbell". He interviewed many famous people including Ian Paisley and the Archbishop of Canterbury as well as pop bands such as REM. The music played was a varied selection including hits as well as lesser known tracks and up-and coming groups. He started with a Saturday evening show which soon became a weekday late evening show. From 1994, Nicky presented the Radio 1 afternoon show which he hosted until he left in September 1997 to join BBC Radio 5. On British TV, he was the original presenter of Wheel of Fortune with Carol Smilie from 1988 until 1997 as well as occasionally presenting Panorama and Newsnight political discussion programmes. He was voted Variety Club of Great Britain Radio Personality of the Year in 1999. During 2000, Nicky claimed he had been approached to take over BBC Radio 2's lunchtime slot from Jimmy Young, but had refused because he wanted to present more serious current affairs programmes. Nicky can currently be heard presenting the Breakfast Programme Weekday mornings on BBC Radio 5 Live.
