BFBS Radio

Launched during World War 2 as an experimental Forces Radio station in an Algerian harem (where else ), the British Forces Broadcasting Service has entertained British armed forces away from home for over six decades.

Working closely alongside the BBC, the  independent service expanded in 1989 to two stations BFBS Radio 1 (popular music) and BFBS Radio 2 (light music, talk programmes plus relays of s/comedy from BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Five Live).

BFBS was one of the first radio stations in Europe to switch to FM in the 1950s. One of the early DJ's heard was David Jacobs, and many well known Radio 1 presenters have broadcast for the station including Tony Blackburn, Tommy Vance and Adrian Juste.

The programmes are made in London and broadcast  from Buckinghamshire around the world via satellite before being re-broadcast to 130,000 forces personnel plus families at their local bases. Output is supplemented by locally produced live programmes at peak times.
